VRH is proud to share the opening of a new, state-of-the-art consolidated cargo handling center at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK)—the first new cargo facility at JFK in 25 years. As a critical hub in both the regional and national supply chain, JFK’s air cargo sector plays a vital economic role, supporting more than 93,000 jobs and generating $11.4 billion in annual economic activity.

This $270 million facility, delivered in partnership with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, Realterm, and Worldwide Flight Services (WFS), consolidates four separate cargo zones into a single, modern location—streamlining operations, easing congestion, and creating space for future development.

At VRH, we bring deep expertise in delivering cargo facilities of all types and sizes. We understand that modern, well-designed airport cargo infrastructure strengthens the broader airport community, supports economic development, and attracts industries reliant on fast, coordinated logistics. With speed-to-market more important than ever for airlines and cargo developers, VRH is uniquely positioned to meet that demand—and this project is a testament to that capability.

Transforming JFK’s Cargo Operations

Operated by WFS, JFK’s primary cargo handler, the 350,000-square-foot facility spans 26 acres and replaces two outdated buildings. It marks the first step in the Port Authority’s broader plans to redevelop JFK’s north cargo area to support future growth with efficient, sustainable infrastructure.

In 2024, JFK handled 1.67 million tons of cargo—a 5% increase over 2023 and 25% more than in 2019—making it the eighth-busiest cargo airport in the U.S. and 21st globally. It is also the top U.S. entry point for low-value international e-commerce packages, handling about one-quarter of all such shipments.

Technology, Sustainability, and Community Impact

The facility introduces an advanced truck dock management system featuring real-time scheduling, automated check-ins, and optimized dock assignments—reducing wait times, emissions, and neighborhood congestion. It also includes 3,000 square feet of temperature-controlled space, JFK’s first on-airport facility dedicated to pharmaceuticals and perishables.

Sustainability was central to the design, with features including electric forklifts, EV chargers, and energy-efficient cargo handling systems. These elements support the Port Authority’s goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050—and mirror VRH’s long-standing commitment to building for a more sustainable future.

The project also surpassed its M/WBE participation goals, awarding more than 42% of construction contracts to minority- and women-owned business enterprises. The facility is expected to create 100 permanent new jobs, with a strong emphasis on hiring from surrounding communities through partnerships with workforce organizations.

A Model for the Future of Air Cargo

“This new facility sets new standards for efficiency, sustainability, and innovation,” added Mike Simpson, CEO of Gateway Services Americas at WFS. “It reflects our commitment to innovation, sustainability, and operational excellence in our drive to serve customers better."

“As we invest nearly $20 billion in JFK’s redevelopment, upgrading the facility's ability to handle cargo here in the nation's biggest city, both by population and economy, is just as important as adding new passenger amenities,” said Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr. “With Building 260, we’re doing just that.”
